The Southern Assault grassroots program has been one of the best teams in the state of Texas for many years now and have certainly garnered the same reputation this season. Bringing competitiveness and toughness to the court at every tournament stop, Director\/Coach Vonzell Thomas and his staff have worked to create tremendous depth at each age group the program supports. The payoff is creating a winning culture complete with some of the nation\u2019s best college prospects and developmental work on par with any program in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably players such as 22\u2019 5-star Keyonte George, 22\u2019 4-star Colin Smith and one of 2022\u2019s late-rising gems Quion Williams (not to mention a time when the team featured dominant 22\u2019 forward Yohan Traore) have drawn the attention of the entire country from the top team. Yet the successful development of its other teams, filled with talented and dynamic players, leave the need for equal recognition of prospects from subsequent recruiting classes. 2023 Trophy Club Byron Nelson guard Finley Bizjack is one of the top players on the club\u2019s 16U team and has continued to turn in top performances for Southern Assault and his high school team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even as recent as this weekend, during the first Adidas 3SSB Live event in Birmingham, Bizjack was putting on a show in front of college coaches from across the country. He lit up the scoreboard and showcased a versatile repertoire to elevate the play of his teammates. While each game is different in the way it unfolds, the consistency of counting on Bizjack\u2019s impact and production do not change. His skillset helps to put the team\u2019s offense into another gear and helps to bring results where it matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As his recruitment is set to take off any day now, I examine why the nuances of his game are suited to immediately impact the next level and why a school will be lucky to have him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Fluid Command of the Pick-And-Roll<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn\u2019t take much time on film to see Bizjack is an explosive athlete. He carries good speed in space and is able to maintain that characteristic with the ball in his hands. As a sign of his IQ on the floor, Bizjack smartly slows the game down outside of fast-break situations to accentuate this particular asset of his skillset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By moving to slow the game down prior to initiating his moves, Bizjack two-fold advantage over his immediate defender. With the defense at a standstill, there is no momentum for the on-ball defender to minimize the initial acceleration from his first step. Additionally, beginning from a stationary position causes defenders to think more about how he will make his move (ie., utilize screens, deny them, etc) further slowing their reaction time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bizjack has enough speed and acceleration in these circumstances to create for himself off the dribble and score both at the rim and from range. However, his skillset is again accentuated by operating out of the pick-and-roll. As the offensive initiator, he utilizes screens to get the defender on his back hip and trailing from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These types of plays enable Bizjack to find and create space where he can explode vertically in and around the paint to finish creatively at the rim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
