Led by head coach and program director Zack Rodriguez, the team’s restructured look was bound to go through some early-tournament hurdles. However, the continued presence of 2022 guards Avery Jackson Jr. and Nicholas Jett in the backcourt significantly helped to ease those struggles and actually provided stability to the team’s production and results.

Coach Rodriguez has done a great job of recruiting additional talent to his team throughout the summer, but his ability to rely on the duo of Jackson and Jett has been a big reason why Texas Dynasty has been a thorn in the side of shoe circuit teams and independents alike. The guard duo complement each other well offensively and do little to hinder the other’s ability to produce for the team. In fact, it’s their combined effort and discipline to stay in plays that have given this team even more upside.

Their individual traits and skillsets possess the talent to produce at the next level. Looking into their unique playing styles, both Jett and Jackson have flown a bit under the radar and stand to have a productive second-half to the grassroots season now that the live period has begun in earnest.

Player: Avery Jackson Jr.

Position: SG (Using Rashad Phillips Player Dictionary)
Height: 6’0”
Class: 2022
School: Frisco Memorial High School (TX)
Grassroots Team: Texas Dynasty

Offers: None
Interests: Cornell, Oral Roberts, Texas State, Dallas Baptist and St. Edwards (TX)

Perimeter Assassin

The incoming Frisco Memorial senior has the ability and mental fortitude to handle the bulk of the scoring load on any given night. His knack for lighting up the nets in multiple ways makes it hard to keep him quiet for long. Throughout this summer, Jackson has been a consistent producer with a handful of 25+ and 30+ scoring outings. His upside on the offensive end and repetitive nature getting those numbers make him an attractive option for college programs.

Jackson gets a lot of his production by working his way outside-in. Whether it’s via catch-and-shoot, stationary, on the move or off-the-dribble from his own creation, he is a constant threat to pour it in from the perimeter. His contributions from this area have gone a long way towards positively spacing the floor for the rest of his team and increasing opportunities to attack the rim.

Jackson receives the ball from Kasai Burton on the wing after the defenders are drawn away from his position. He has developed strong spatial awareness and court vision inside the 3-point line to navigate traffic and get to the paint. With a quick first step and the added benefit of an extra half-step advantage on defenders forced to respect his shooting ability, Jackson can create separation quickly to find premium scoring space.

His frame carries a lot of toughness with it and attacking bigger bodies around the rim is not an issue. Jackson has shown repeatedly on film to take these situations head-on and continue to convert plays at a high rate. He does a good job of maintain control, avoiding offensive fouls in these circumstances and constantly surveying the floor to facilitate to his teammates. The combination of his scoring tendencies and his playmaking ability provide a versatile and advantageous skillset to provide college programs at the next level.

Jackson is able to penetrate after receiving the pass and draws 5-star forward Vince Iwuchukwu. Jett’s offensive skillset is very complimentary to Jackson’s and the two exhibit tremendous effort on the court to keep plays alive and their team in ball games. However, Jett’s approach to scoring and making plays on the offensive end if more along the lines of inside-out rather than outside-in.

Carrying with him a very keen eye on the floor, Jett has a strong tendency to float underneath the top layer of the defense and find gaps to set up shop. It’s here where he can quickly and efficiently survey the rest of the court and go to work. With a smooth and consistent jumper, this is where Jett does a lot of his scoring damage in both catch-and-shoot and off-the-dribble situations.

His contributions in this way help to take the pressure off ball-handlers and help to draw in frontcourt defenders opening additional opportunities for bigs on the block. Jett also does a great job in this area of posting up smaller defenders and knows how to use his body to gain/hold space to put his team in a stronger scoring position. Fully capable of scoring from all three levels, inside the perimeter is purely a ‘playground’ for Jett to dictate the flow of the game and balance the floor for his team.

Jett posts up in the short-corner, surveys the floor quickly and makes a hard jab step to get his defender off-balance. However, what shows up on film in the way of effort is equally impressive. In the simplest terms, he leaves it all out on the court every time he steps onto it.

Jett makes a conscious effort to crash the glass on both ends of the floor and has an innate timing to his approach in this area. He has a sixth sense about where the ball is likely to come off the rim and attacks that spot using his speed and body to bring down the rebound. This effort isn’t fruitless though, because Jett is incredibly explosive and has strong hands to convert on a lot of these rebounding attempts even over much bigger frontcourt players.

This style of play not only nets him extra production and helps his team to win, but fully displays his true love and competitiveness in basketball. Jett applies the same top-end effort on the defensive end, jumping passing lanes, and chasing down fast break opportunities to negate opposing scoring opportunities just as much as he tries to score the ball. His motor is strong and naturally relentless. Jett gets the job done.

Jett comes off the screen looking to score and while his shot misses, he still beats 6 players across the court to grab the rebound and get a second opportunity.

Jett boxes out 5-star forward Vince Iwuchukwu and skies for the rebound over him.

Jett is able to elevate for the missed layup, control the rebound, draw the foul and convert his own layup.

Jett is able to secure the pass on the fast-break and hit a trailing teammate for the layup.

Entering the 2021 grassroots season, one of Texas’ toughest independent programs experienced some significant roster turnover.
