It’s the norm rather than an anomaly regardless of how long they’ve been in the sport. Even if a player makes a “late” decision to enter the sport relative to when their peers start, does not automatically signal a lack of talent or an increased likelihood to fail. In fact there are numerous examples of these situations unfolding producing positive or successful outcomes.

Notably, San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson hadn’t played significant high school basketball prior to his senior season when he experienced a growth spurt from 5’9” to 6’7”. The physical change sparked the journey for the star that would later earn the nickname “The Admiral,” become the 1st selection in the 1987 NBA Draft and produce a Hall of Fame career with the Spurs. Yes, Robinson was able to take advantage of his new found physicality and re-tooled ability to dominate on the court. Yet it was his utilization of prior experiences in basketball, leading up to his professional career, and in other sports that allowed him to successfully adapt after the fact and become a success story.

While this knowingly presents one of the most extreme examples on the success spectrum for a player breaking into the sport at a relatively “late” juncture, it does not eliminate the fact that other success stories can also formulate from similar circumstances and with relative magnitudes (i.e., making one’s high school team, earning a college scholarship or even playing professionally somewhere). These traits have been embodied by the current career path of 2024 forward Averi Aaron.

The similarity of circumstances is only fitting coming that Aaron hails from the city where Robinson made his Hall of Fame career happen. Playing for Boerne High School and grassroots program SA Finest, the 6’1” forward made the transition to basketball 2 years ago from competitive soccer. Despite making the move over to the hardwood from the soccer pitch, Aaron has quickly picked up the nuances of the game and displayed her potential over the last year. In her first season at Boerne, she accumulated an impressive list of accolades for any player let alone one “new” to the game:

All-State Selection by Texas Girl’s Coaches Association

All-State Selection by Texas Association of Basketball Coaches

All-Region Selection

First-team All-District Selection

First-team Academic All-District Selection

Newcomer of the Year – District 28-4A

San Antonio Express News Player of the Week

San Antonio Express News All-Area Selection

Her continued development and growing familiarity with the game should come as a warning of her overall potential. Her play on the court this summer has produced confirmatory flashes that her skillset is still morphing into something more consistent and expansive. Aaron’s progression in such a short time lends her trajectory towards earning a college scholarship down the road. There are already specific aspects and productive areas associated with her game, which will be elaborated on shortly, that confirm her trajectory is well ahead of where it should be for her short career and why the college route is not out of the question.

Anchoring the Paint

It has not taken Aaron long to develop her ‘bread and butter’ on the court. She is a glass-cleaner and highly efficient low-post scorer at this stage of her development. However, her success in these particular areas is all in the details of her positioning and ability to produce play after play. This is specifically where her experience on the soccer pitch is paying immediate dividends on the hardwood for the soon-to-be sophomore.

Aaron is highly adept at reading angles and predicting where shots are likely to come off the rim. She’s always in with a chance to pull down rebounds, because she reacts early to position herself accordingly near the basketball. With strong grip, good arm length and agility, Aaron is a magnet for securing the ball off the glass on nearly every play. She displays a good second-leap to battle with opposing forwards and guards to secure the miss. Her continued effort to fight for position can easily see her secure 5-6 rebounds per half and makes her a threat to record a double-double every game. She is relentless in this particular area and it leads to offensive production as well.

Fighting for position is not new to Aaron, going back to her soccer days, and she has a firm understanding of how to use her body to create opportunities for herself on the court. She does a good job of making herself a big target for guards in post-entry situations and other ball-movement areas involved with the team’s sets. She has a strong motor and is constantly moving on the offensive end to maintain strong scoring positioning.

What’s more once Aaron receives the ball down low, she is decisive and makes quick moves to score the ball. Her eye for the basket is very clear and her ability to hit shots at a high clip cannot be ignored when she’s on the floor. Combined with her ability to grab multiple offensive boards per game makes her a potent offensive threat with these traits alone.

Aaron has a real knack for finding and filling open spaces created by moving defenses. Here her defender begins to slide over towards the penetrating ball-handler, but Aaron is also aware and mirrors the opening gap to make herself a big target. She receives the ball in the paint and is able to gather herself, with multiple defenders in her face, to score over the defense.

After the ball is worked around the perimeter, Aaron makes herself out to be a big target and calls for the ball. Upon receiving the pass, she makes a quick power move towards the paint and scores over the contesting defender.

Aaron is the last line of defense on this play and a passing window appears for the ball-handler to move the ball up the court. The pass causes Aaron to play multiple defenders forcing a late-timed attempt to disrupt the play. Her length and quickness allow her to contest the play low without drawing a foul and the shooter misses the mark.

Mobility Creating Added Production

Don’t be fooled though, Aaron’s contributions are not solely limited to rebounding and low-post scoring. Her experience in soccer again has gifted her with assets to thrive on the basketball court. Specifically, finding a way to carry over her mobility on the pitch and covering large swaths of ground to both outpace other players in the frontcourt and provide rotational help defense.

This is readily evident in transition where Aaron can make herself an asset. Aaron showcases good acceleration and finds her top speed fairly quickly to create space between her and her defender in the open. Already with the capability to make herself a big target, she is able to provide relief to guards should transition opportunities wane during the development of the play. Aaron also has good hand-eye coordination to pull in quick passes and translate those opportunities into solid shot attempts. Additionally, the ability to put the ball on the floor allows Aaron to seamlessly snag rebounds and start the break herself.

Taking it even further, Aaron’s potential to put the ball on the floor and showcase strong spatial awareness adds value to her team and her skillset as a facilitator. She’s capable of using her ball-handling skills to initially get by her defender, but she does a good job on continuing to survey the floor and the movement around her to keep all options open.

As an unselfish player, it’s common to see Aaron receive the entry pass around the paint and quickly find a cutting teammate or another developing opportunity with precision. It’s well within her game to become a scoring threat, both in face-up and back-to-the-basket situations, with the added production of making plays for her team should defenses begin to hone-in on her more.

Receiving the ball in the short corner, Aaron first looks to score from her position and quickly realizes there is an opportunity to attack the rim around colliding defenders. The defense is able to recover slightly after she puts the ball on the floor, but their movement opens up a teammate on the perimeter. Aaron is able to see this and gets the ball out precisely to complete the assist.

This time Aaron receives the ball at the top of the key and again puts the ball on the floor. Gaining some ground on her primary defender, she draws a 2nd man preventing a clean look at the basketball. Aaron is able to recognize this early and dump the ball off to the corner, without drawing the charge, and allows her teammate to get off a clean perimeter shot.

Aaron is able to react quickly enough to a cutting offensive player towards the basket. After receiving the pass, the offensive player gathers for an open layup but Aaron closes with good speed and body control to not foul and successfully block the shot.

Where Does Aaron’s Game Go From Here?

Pointing towards Aaron’s short career and exposure to the sport at a competitive level, there is significant room for growth still to consider. Her development has been solid to this juncture and her production for both her high school and shoe-circuit teams reflect that notion. Her rebounding rate and efficiency scoring the ball inside are major pluses and the comfort level she is exuding on the floor is growing by the game.

Yet there are instances in her film that suggest more is definitely coming in the way of her skillset. As she continues to develop, her offensive game is likely to see increased midrange scoring opportunities and self-creation with comfort putting the ball on the floor more than she does now. Aaron has attempted a small percentage of her shots from the perimeter and this area too will be a growing aspect to her arsenal with continued work. In fact, showing improvement in her shooting tendencies away from the basketball will produce a mutual increase in opportunities to score off the dribble.

Additionally becoming a perimeter threat will positively impact Aaron’s playmaking abilities, as well as complimenting her court vision and passing skills. Similar improvements can be projected on the defensive side of the ball where her range has already proven to be an asset. As her grasp of concepts, under different coaching staffs and incorporated priorities, Aaron features the tools to offer wide-ranging help to a number of areas on the court and increased likelihood to disrupt plays. These developments will take time, but the expedience Aaron has already shown to have put her current skillset together provides strong evidence that her development is quickly occurring.

Aaron finds open space in transition and seamlessly squares up to the basket. Without hesitation she releases the elbow jumper, over a closing defender, and nails the shot. This is currently a comfortable range and should play an expanding role in her on-court contributions.

After a long rebound, Aaron moves over to her teammate as a relief-valve. Upon receiving the pass she notices she is all alone on the perimeter and in-rhythm steps into a 3-pointer. While the shot doesn’t fall, the lack of hesitation, sustainment of her shooting form and confidence to take the shot suggests this area of her game is growing and will play a bigger role in her overall skillset sooner rather than later.

Aaron does a good job tracking the play and maintaining her boxout on her man. This attention to detail nets her the rebound and she recognizes the opportunity to start the break with her immediate outlets covered by the defense. After a couple of dribbles, she recognizes an opening to facilitate the ball up the floor. Aaron has shown comfort putting the ball on the floor already in the half-court, but doing so in full-court situations is likely to become more common whether it leads to scoring chances or opportunities to pass teammates open.

Player: Averi AaronPosition: PF (Using Rashad Phillips Player Dictionary)Height: 6’1”Class: 2024School: Boerne High School (TX)Grassroots Team: SA Finest – Team Ki Will (TX) Offers: NoneInterests: Austin College, Abilene Christian, Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Midwestern State, Mary Hardin-Baylor, UT-Rio Grande Valley, UC-San Diego and Wichita State The adoption of a constant grind and strong work ethic […]

[486,475
531,534,533,532
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
