Having already covered exceptional guards Keeley
Parks and Keziah Lofton, both in angry pursuit of 5-star status, the duo are
joined by numerous other in-state threats attacking the national scene and
vying for their own shot at the top of the rankings. The latest of which is Ada
(OK) guard Sania Richardson, who cannot be counted out from consideration as a
5-star player down the road.

Richardson has already taken part in events with Team USA, notably
the 2019 Ballin Across the Border Global Games, which included top national
talent several years older than herself. Developmentally, she has been showing
for years that the sky is the limit and she is up for any challenge placed in
front of her on a basketball court. Her skillset has continued to elevate every
season and the consistency playing against older competition has proven to be
an asset rather than a hinderance.

Even under these circumstances, Richardson has always been
one of the most dangerous players on the floor. She is a very capable floor
general exuding leadership and high energy to lift her team when it matters
most. Her productivity across the floor cannot be ignored and will only
continue to rival the top players she competes against night in and night out
regardless of class. As such, Richardson is displaying successful traits that
will continue to lead to productive games at the Division 1 level.

Lethal Burst

Watching her play, it’s immediately hard to ignore her speed
with the ball in her hands. Regardless of where she receives it on the court, Richardson
is able to turn on the jets and place herself and her teammates in advantageous
situations. The straight-line speed and momentum are purely enough to take her past
the majority of players on the floor at any given time, but it’s the next level
of her athleticism that truly creates scoring chances for her team.

Her rapid first step is the deadliest aspect of having to
guard a player like Richardson. The advantage she gains from her initial move
pins defenders against the ropes and allows Richardson to essentially freely
roam the court to get what she wants. As a result, Richardson has nicely
developed an arsenal of options to make defenses pay. She has become very attuned
to positively impacting the game and making adjustments on the fly after
beating her primary defender. It is this knowledge and understanding of taking
what defenses will give her that have allowed Richardson to become a very
efficient and complete floor general on the court.

Sania attacks the rim between a converging double-team and converts the layup off of her burst.

Sania is able to freeze the top defender with her initial move opening a large gap at the top of the key. She recognizes a number of defenders immediately under the basket and is able to softly score over the top with her floater.

Sania receives the ball with a rotating defense and attacks the weak point between the top two defenders. The frontcourt is able to recover a bit quicker and again Sania is able to score over the top of the defense without losing her opportunity to score.

Playmaking on the Move

Due to her electric speed and acceleration, Richardson is a
handy piece to utilize in all aspects of the game (i.e. press break, command of
the half-court, etc). She has excellent natural feel for how things are
developing and subsequently making decisions that produce extra possessions for
her team. Her first step and ability to create open space only increases this
ability to read the floor and make smart decisions amidst a changing defensive
landscape.

Richardson’s capability to “set up” defenders is the next
wrinkle she’s added in her attacks that help to rapidly increase her chances of
successfully impacting the game. Her patience and combined explosiveness ensure
primary defenders become pinned behind her hip and struggle to recover once she
makes her moves. As trailing defenders attempt to recover, Richardson has
already moved on towards finding her shot or passing out to open teammates. Her
mental processing speed allows her to see the floor exceptionally well and
break down defenses on the run.

She maintains excellent court vision on the move and sees
all options unfolding in real time. She routinely draws multiple defenders at
every level of the court and is able to maintain complete sight of the floor to
keep pressing the attack. Her ability to do this keeps defenses guessing and in
constant rotation opening up lanes to score or facilitate.

Sania is able to quickly escape the corner inbounds pass before the press is able to converge on her position. Her speed is able to carry her through multiple levels of the defense and her use of angles help to carry home the end-to-end scoring opportunity.

Sania is able to set up her attack nicely to her strong hand, but the defender does a good job of staying within range of the move to cause an adjustment. Quick vision and thinking allow Sania to let off an accurate pass to her teammate in the corner for 3.

Sania’s initial move causes the defender to slip underneath the screen, but a late rotation by the switching defender allows the opportunity to penetrate. Sania is able to turn on the acceleration again in between multiple defenders to attack the rim for the layup.

Comfort in the Trees

Richardson’s first step also typically allows her to access
the paint once she passes her primary defender. Inside the perimeter, she
garners the quick-twitch ability to stop on a dime and hit the midrange with
touch, float her shot over the defense, step back for a 3 or get all the way to
the rim. Her accumulation of efficient shots and approach to each is impressive
especially noting the competition she faces.

While Richardson has all of these tools in her bag to
control and impact the game, she has a real knack for doing so from the paint
in. Scoring in bunches comes naturally to her game, but the need to do so does
not outrank making the best play for her team. Drawing in frontcourt players
has become a common occurrence for Richardson with the explosiveness she
possesses on the move and puts her in a lot of situations to immediately
dictate what happens on the floor.

Typically an area of panic for ball-handlers, especially in
quick-changing circumstances, Richardson manages to stay calm and actually elevates
her playing style amongst the “trees” and traffic. Her court vision in this
area is nearly flawless and dropping dimes to her teammates inside and outside
of the lane is easily possible even with multiple flailing arms around. If
passing options aren’t the best play however, she has no issues moving around
or through traffic to score tough buckets in close to the rim. Richardson has a
high motor and knows how to best utilize it to get her team in winning
situations.

Sania receives the pass on the fast break and is able to quickly spin back to the middle to finish the play, despite closing defenders.

Sania is again able to smartly navigate traffic on the run and shield herself from significant contact during her shot attempt.
